Mandalay

Getting there

Situated in Kalutara, Ahangama about 45 km off Colombo is this enchanting villa bordering the Koggala Lake. It is just a 2 ? drive to Kalutara from the Katunayake International airport.

Atmosphere

Mandalay is a beautiful private villa overlooking the Koggala Lake and surrounding lush greenery. With its captivating view of the lake, the hanging railway and the extraordinary architecture of the villa, Mandalay possesses uniqueness and an indescribable character. The old villa was recently renovated and Geoffrey Bawa, the renowned Sri Lankan architect also made some changes and has contributed to the creation of this simple yet beautiful villa. The villa creates a feeling of simple country living in harmonious surroundings. The pavilion overlooking the pool and lake is the open dining area and a great place to sit with a sundowner.

Rooms and facilities

The villa consisting of three double rooms is built to a fully open concept, appreciating nature and solitude. The rooms are spacious, simple yet charming and is furnished with antiques. The rooms are not air-conditioned but has ceiling fans and plenty fresh breeze to keep you cool. The master bedroom, which consists of the entire second storey, has a bathtub in the room but also has an open air bathroom adjoining the room. The balcony opening up to the master bedroom gives great views of the lake and the surrounding greenery. Once in a while you can spot a train on the hanging railway across the river.

The villa will consist of a room boy, a cook and a night watcher.

Note that the cook is not a professional chef and will only be able to put together a simple meal for you. You can be the master/mistress of your own kitchen or dine out or settle for some simple dishes, which the cook will be able to prepare. My advice is for you to try some local delicacies, which the cook would probably be better at.

Dining and common areas

You can dine in the open dining area overlooking the lake. There are many places in the villa where you can enjoy a drink or simply relax and enjoy the views. Have a swim in your own private pool or enjoy the sunset and a boat ride in the lake.

Things to see and do

  • Take a walk in the Galle Fort, a living world heritage site
  • Visit the nearby Unawatunna beach, known to be one of the finest beaches in the world
